Magnet Schools

What is it?

Magnet schools attract students from across a school district by offering students and parents a unique academic, career development, or arts-related program of study. All courses offered in magnet schools are aligned to the South Carolina academic standards.

What is different?

Many magnet schools require a student application, audition, and/or participation in an enrollment lottery. Both curriculum and instructional delivery are specifically designed to suit the goals of the magnet schools.

What are the possible benefits?

  • Increased academic achievement
  • Increased opportunities for parent participation
  • Focused instruction in a core area of study (math/science, music, engineering, etc.)
  • Improved student attendance
  • Small class sizes

Who else is doing it?

Fifty-two schools in South Carolina currently offer magnet school options.
